Hands in the Soil, Hands in the Clay, Finding Hope

When my hands are not in the clay, they tend to be in the soil.

Today it was the soil. It was a beautiful sunny Sunday here in western Massachusetts, even though the world is a little bit dark right now with the COVID19 pandemic. We are all staying alone, or with loved ones, while this virus scurries away from us all. Lets hope it can’t latch on to us as it has in other parts of the world.

It has been difficult to make pottery this past week, with shows on hold, everything is so up in the air. Yet people are purchasing my work online which is a very nice thing. I do have a few new biodegradable urns to share here, as I am still making… just making with a little haze clouding my mind.

Today is one of the first warm days of almost spring, and the chickens are happily free ranging, hopefully eating the ticks which are already in full force because of the mild weather. I am so happy on the land, working on what needs to be done. The haze seems to lift as I focus on cutting fallen trees for fire wood with our little electric charged chainsaw. Good physical labor, making me feel empowered, and productive… even maybe… that I have control of something. Feeling a tiny bit self sufficient as I picked spinach and lettuce in the greenhouse for dinner. Yet I acknowledge that there is no such thing as complete self sufficiency, as I plant seeds in the greenhouse for the upcoming months… something I can’t be doing without the seed companies, and the greenhouse.

In these uncertain times I look for hope in the regenerative power of the earth, and I remind myself through my pottery, that I am making something out of a piece of pliable earth. I realize that the earth sustains me in many ways, and that I have a place in this world to bring beauty and hope through my art.

We all have that place in the world. Stay positive, and remember to bring beauty into this world!

Here are a few of the new biodegradable urns.
