How to Size an Urn for Your Loved One

How to size an urn

It’s very rare, but every now and then a customer will report back to me after a purchase of an urn that the ashes didn't fit in the urn. All urns made at LuciaUrns.com are accurately made to accommodate the cremains of your loved one. Please be sure to chose the correct size. If you are not sure, go one size up.

If all of the ashes do not fit in the urn it could be one of four things:

1. Did you take the ashes out of the plastic bag?

2. Your loved one may have had large dense bones, (body fat does not matter, bones are all that remain).

3. The crematorium may not have crushed and ground the cremains fully.

4. For your pet - did you choose private, partitioned or communal cremation. Many times pets are cremated communally, unless you pay extra for private cremation.

Ashes, aka cremains are measured via cubic inches. One cubic inch = approximately 1 pound of human weight. The ceramic urns that I make come in five sizes - Individual, holds up to 220 cubic inches. Medium, holds up to 120 cubic inches. Small, holds up to 40 cubic inches. Keepsake, holds up to 12 cubic inches. Companion Urns are 350 - 400 cubic inches. Custom size urns are available. Custom orders usually take 8-10 weeks.
